Paediatrics is the branch of medicine that cares for infants, children, and adolescents until age 16-18 years. Paediatrics recognises that children and adolescents have different physiology, psychology and autonomy to adults. It recognises that children and adolescents are growing and developing, which impacts the outcome of medical conditions and treatments. Some medical conditions affect children exclusively, and diseases of childhood contrast with age-related chronic diseases of adults.
Food allergy is a common condition in early childhood, affecting up to 10% of children under 5 years. Paediatrics and Immunology overlap in caring for children with allergy.
